Outbreak After Dark is a monthly series from Infectious Dose creator and host Heather McSharry, PhD, exploring the stranger side of infectious disease through atmosphere, folklore, history, and real medical mysteries.
Rather than traditional lectures or deep dives, each episode starts with something unsettling, strange, or unbelievable — then carefully separates fear from fact and rumor from reality. The goal isn’t to turn listeners into scientists, but to meet people where curiosity begins.
Every episode unfolds around the fire with themed cocktails, mocktails, snacks, and desserts inspired by the story, with recipes shared in the companion blog post for listeners who want to follow along. Alongside Heather is co-host Kate, whose curiosity and humor help guide the conversation as each mystery unfolds.
Most episodes focus on real outbreaks, myths, and medical mysteries, though the series occasionally branches into experimental storytelling and themed specials — from narrative reimaginings to darker seasonal episodes where the story comes first and the discussion follows.
