Summary

One year. Three original hosts. A surprising number of questionable culinary decisions.

For the first anniversary of Outbreak After Dark, Heather welcomes Kate and Sam back around the fire to revisit the moments that made Year One memorable and occasionally difficult to explain.

From plague doctors and tuberculosis ghosts to weaponized dandruff, cardboard cohosts, and the evolution of a simple fireside conversation into something much stranger, the original crew looks back at the stories, surprises, and spectacular derailments that shaped the show.

There's also an anniversary mini-game, a randomly selected Menu of Misfortune, and a look at what's coming in Year Two...including new ways for listeners to gather around their own fires.

Pull up a chair. We're celebrating a year of infectious curiosity, good company, and absolutely no guarantee that anyone will stay on topic.

One Year Around the Fire — Outbreak After Dark's First Anniversary

One year ago, Outbreak After Dark began with a simple idea: gather a few friends around a fire, pour something good to drink, and explore the strange places where infectious disease intersects with history, folklore, fear, and human behavior.

Twelve months later, that idea has taken us farther than anyone expected.

For our first anniversary, the original campfire crew is back together. Kate returns for a special evening while continuing her break from regular recording, and Sam rejoins us for the first time since stepping away after our first six episodes. Together, we revisit the moments that helped turn an experimental fireside conversation into something with a personality—and a collection of inside jokes—all its own.

A Year of Strange Conversations

What makes an episode memorable? Sometimes it's the science. Sometimes it's a historical detail nobody expected. And sometimes it's a phrase that absolutely should not have survived the editing process.

We revisit some of Year One's more memorable discoveries and derailments, including plague doctors, spiders, tuberculosis ghosts, and the origins of such unforgettable expressions as "flesh volcano" and "weaponized dandruff."

We also talk about how the show changed over the year. What began as three friends talking around a fire gradually expanded into immersive evenings, historical settings, horror movie discussions, experimental storytelling, and the occasional cardboard cohost.

Along the way, we discovered that Outbreak After Dark isn't really a horror show, even when its subject matter gets unsettling. It's a place for conversations that follow infectious disease into unexpected territory, with plenty of room for humor, curiosity, and the occasional spectacular tangent.

The Anniversary Mini-Game

Naturally, no anniversary celebration would be complete without a little competition.

Kate and Sam face off in three rounds of infectious-disease challenges: identifying memorable quotes from past episodes, making decisions in questionable public-health scenarios, and solving a mystery pathogen using a series of increasingly revealing clues.

The rules are established. The scoring is somewhat less reliable. And the final outcome may raise serious questions about the integrity of the competition.

The Menu of Misfortune

After a year of inventing increasingly questionable names for perfectly good food, we decided not to choose our anniversary menu ourselves.

Instead, we put every Year One cocktail, zero-proof drink, savory snack, and dessert into separate blind draws and let chance determine what we'd serve.

The result is The Menu of Misfortune, featuring four returning recipes from four previous episodes:

  • House Call — Heather's signature rye Manhattan with flamed orange peel, originally from Speakeasy Medicine.

  • Symbiosis Spritz — A bright hibiscus, blackberry, and basil zero-proof drink from Love Bites.

  • Rumor Mill — Savory campfire s'mores with prosciutto, Gouda, and fig preserves from Campfire Curiosities.

  • Pecan Pustules — A rather unfortunate-looking transformation of leftover pecan pie from Pilgrims and Plagues.

No strategic pairing. No culinary oversight. Just four recipes selected by fate.

You'll find the downloadable anniversary recipe cards at the bottom of this post.

What's Next for Outbreak After Dark?

The anniversary also gives us a chance to look ahead.

In Year Two, we'll continue experimenting with the format, welcoming friends and guest hosts, and exploring new ways to combine infectious disease with history, storytelling, and entertainment.

We're also introducing Outbreak After Dark Gathering Kits, beginning with the November episode. These downloadable resources will help listeners turn an episode into an easy evening with friends, with recipes, atmosphere ideas, and occasional conversation prompts or games.

And we're developing The Night Library: Further Reading from Outbreak After Dark, a collection of books inspired by the subjects we explore around the fire. Eventually, we hope it will also include a Kids' Corner featuring books that help younger readers understand infectious diseases and the world of microbes.

There may even be a full-fledged Outbreak After Dark game show in our future. Assuming we can agree on how scoring works.

Keep the Embers Warm

The first year of Outbreak After Dark wasn't quite what we imagined when we began. In many ways, it became something better because of the people who joined the conversation, the unexpected directions they took it, and the moments none of us expected.

The fire is still here. There's always room for another chair.

And we have a feeling Year Two is going to get interesting.
